Well, I can say they seem to be well-intentioned replies, but not really germane. Actually, in the interim I was already forced into a hard reset, and didn't even have an option to change language, which doesn't matter since I don't want to eliminate or interfere with the Japanese. I'm basically content working in Japanese except for the relative slowness of input because of the extra conversion steps. (Yes, I have considered some of the alternatives for Japanese input, especially the full version of ATOK, but that's a separate topic and probably merits it's own thread--in Japanese.) However, I do have a couple of programs where, per the Subject: of this thread, I am reading in English and it doesn't work perfectly. The worst offender is the Adobe PDF reader for Palm. Not really Adobe's fault--their program warns you that it's an unsupported OS. And it's actually a good thing that it tries to run anyway, and mostly succeeds. But that leads to... Right now I think the hackish approach may offer a viable solution. In particular, I'm experimenting with X-Master and FontHack. So far X-Master doesn't seem to have any problems in the Japanese environment, but I'll knock on wood anyway. (Gee, I hope particle board is an acceptable substitute. Doesn't seem to be any normal wood around here.) Unfortunately, the famous version of FontHack just takes one look at the OS and throws up its hands in despair. Not a crash, but no attempt at continuation. Not yet sure if this basic approach is going to work, but of course my idea is to specify a simple and limited English font for those programs that prefer it. That seems to be within the capabilities of FontHack, except that I can't yet explore those capabilities... So now one alternative is to search for a Japanese version of FontHack, and since the source code is available there is some chance someone has already created this. Alternately, there may be an original Japanese program that does the same thing, or a Japanese version of a less famous program with similar capabilities. And finally, there is a new version of FontHack in beta release, and I could take that desperate step. Perhaps it will accept the Japanese OS or at least continue trying after that point. I hope that the worst that could happen is another hard reset. So now that scope of the problem has been refined a bit more, does anyone have any suggestions or helpful URLs?
