As I can figure from www.palmone.com/us/support/helpnotes/gsmfaq.html PalmV Modem + Nokia5110 will get me the same functionality as PalmV Modem used with land line. For example, I will be able to HotSync just the same way I do it now with the modem itself (using the same standard Palm software). I dont quite understand your point, why Ericsson with DI-27 modem could be better solution? BTW, PalmV Modem is assumed to work at 33.6k (may be not in mobile setup though), and I can still connect my PalmV Modem to Ericsson 768/788 using the same 'GPS Upgrade Kit'. As gsmfaq (link above) states, GPS Upgrade Kit consists of a cable to connect PalmV Modem to a mobile phone and a so-called Modem Utility program that will update firmware in the modem to work with any particular phone.
