PalmConnect USB Kit

Searching for a new iBook, I realised that I would have to buy a
PalmConnect USB Kit to connect our Palm IIIx machines to the iBook.
However, it appears these are about $A100! For a cable? It seems that
the software is available from the Palm website.

Is there a cheaper alternative than buying the $A100 Palm version of the
serial to USB cable, with software?

Thanks.

Kwan.

Let's see. It's been a while since I bought my connector cable.

I think I bought just the Serial-USB cable from MobileWorld (I think
that's the name). They are located on Hunter St, Wynyard, opposite
OptusWorld.

And yes, it's a huge saving without the softwares.

Otherwise check out some of the US web sites. These short connector
cables are definitely available singly. Even then, they are expensive.

There are alternatives, but the Palm USB kit that I got from Staples.com
was only $30 + tax and shipping -- far from $100. Where are you located?

Also, hope you have better luck with the kit than I. I've only been able
to sync at 19.2k, and Palm support has been no help at all...

Is that with the additional Palm software installed from their site that
drives the USB ports?

$A100 = Australian dollars. Equivalent of about $US50.

That's one thing I'm worrying about if I don't get the Palm version.

Worth worrying about -- but remember that I _am_ using the Palm version!
Anyhow, check out Macfixit.com and look under the Palm section. Lots of
people have trouble with the USB sync, but most of them seem to have
found a work around. I really haven't, unless you consider the superslow
sync a fix.

I bought the $30 USB connect kit for the cable. I had already
downloaded the latest version of the Macintosh Palm Desktop from Palm.
That contains all the USB support needed. I didn't bother using the CDs
that came with the cable. I just plugged in the cable and off I went.
I haven't had any problems with USB HotSync'ing with my Blue&White G3
running OS 9.1.

Glad it's working for you, John. My Tangerine iBook experience (w/
System 9.1) has been a LOT less successful. I've had two of these cables
now. Both of them will sync at 19.2k, but otherwise don't work. I don't
know if this could be a problem with my USB port on my iBook, or if I
could have gotten two bad cables, but I've tried just about everything
-- reinstalling the system software, making sure all of my firmware is
up to date, testing the USB port with a USB zip (works fine), testing
other cradles (works the same), starting with a new data file (same
problem). The only other thing I can imagine is that the data file is
having a problem, and that I ought to export and re-import it. But since
I've tried a new data file and still can't get it to work, I don't know
if it'll help.

If anyone out there has an idea, I'm open.
