If you are being prompted with a '$', you should be
able to just type in the name of the program. (Just
like DOS, as it turns out.)

If you are staring at a blue screen (i.e., running X),
pull down the menu labeled 'Shells' and pick one.
You will then get a window with a '$' in it.
Then you can type in the name of the program.

(This is as of Slackware 2.3.0, BTW. Your mileage
may vary.)

Linux may not be as friendly-looking as DOS, but
it sure is (for me) much easier to program in.
Have you ever tried to work with EMS/XMS/HIGH memory?
It's a nightmare.
