Actually, you seem to be missing the point.  (In 'you' I include a large
number of people who flame AOL users as 99.999% "lamers.")

There are a *huge* number of intelligent people on AOL, who have a lot
to contribute.  But due to the unwelcome and general low intelligence
standards evidenced on Internet groups, the more intelligent users stay
away.  Internet has a treasure trove of resources, but of USENET very
little is actually useful.

I wouldn't give up the parenting chat on AOL for an IRC channel, because
I can count on the people on the chat on AOL to be responsible and to
contribute, whereas on an IRC channel, a bunch of lame surfers tend to
come in and act juvenile.
