That's a pretty impossible statement, given that every OS has its
strengths and weaknesses. The Amiga OS is very well suited to handling
single user interactivity and realtime media stream processing. It has
(for quite some time, actually) the real low-overhead, preemtive
multitasking lacking in the MacOS and Windows, coupled with the
realtime response lacking in OS/2. It has been a microkernel based OS
since its introduction in 1985, it supports device independent I/O, a
simple and efficient GUI, both graphical and text shells, an
implementation of REXX that's supported with command sets by nearly
every major application on the market, etc.

On the downside, OS/2 and UNIX beats it easily on memory
protection. Most other OSs have better GUI-based application
development systems. Windows and Mac have better high-level support of
things like MIDI devices. Graphics drivers are possible, but very
tricky to write, and there's no way to coordinate multiple devices
from different manufacturers. There are two object systems (one for
GUI creation, one for media types), neither of which is as powerful as
IBM's SOM. There's nothing around like OLE2, or better yet, OpenDoc
(in fact, they if ESCOM goes ahead on development, that would be a
good place to start).

Of course, nothing much has been done on it in two years. But it had a
really big head start...

Exactly.
