   I've seen it happen.  I've done it, as a matter of fact.

   The torrent of error messages alerted me to my misstep and I was
able to kill the silly thing before it reached my home directory.
(The moral of the story is, of course, that even though a Unix user
can do some incredibly stupid things, it's a lot harder for them
to screw over the entire system while they're doing it.)
