I hardly consider it >an essential proporty of an OS. WRONG. WRONG. WRONG. Dynamic linking gives you a level of indirection that allows you very easily to update algorithms and such in the OS/Toolbox while not having to touch existing apps. Look, for example, at QuickTime. QT 2.0 comes out with new improved blitters and all QT apps run fast---doen by dynamic linking through Component Manager. The same thing is true for CFM. One can replace a CFM shared library with a new version (for example one that now uses natve PPC code rather than 68K cade, like the Sound Manager 3.0 to 3.1 transition) and your apps again go faster without you touching them. In the case of SOM-style or Component Manager-style dynamic one also now has the ability, as a programmer, to override only a few calls to modify the behavior of some entity while inheriting the rest of the behavior. Object-orientation, but language netural and built into the OS. Please get your facts right in future. Maynard
