Your studies are worth zilch to me. : OK. I'll just take your word for it. I'm sure you've run a controlled : side-by-side study comparing MacOS to Linux. Have you ever even used a : Mac? Have you ever even thought for yourself? Try to ignore the studies for a moment and tell me why _you_ think MacOS is better than linux. For my classes and my job I use macs, dos/windows machines, a SparcServer, and HP workstations. My own machine is a linux box. There's a reason for that. It's the best operating system for what I want to do. You could show me as many studies as you want saying I'm an idiot for running linux because in a "controlled side-by-side study by this-and-that billion doller consulting firm" all operating systems were proven inferior to your particular OS of choice. I'd nod my head and ignore you. I enjoy having control over my OS. I like being able to choose which shell or window manager I use. I don't like having somebody make those decisions for me, no matter what studies exist validating those decisions. : BTW, have you considered the fact that the applications that are used in : the real world aren't available on Linux? How does that affect : productivity? Have you considered that there's more than one "real world?" If by productivity you mean managing your recipes, typing letters, and playing the latest games, then DOS/windows is for you. If you don't care about the latest games, and have gobs of cash to spare, then MacOS is the way to go. If "productivity" means creating scientific papers with tex while serving web space, handling mail, providing tcp/ip connectivity to a small lan through a PPP dialup, all on a budget, linux is the obvious choice. At least I thought it was obvious. If you can show me a way to do what I do now with my 8 meg 386/40 cheaper or faster or both with a mac, I'll be converted. Until then, your studies mean nothing to me or to anybody else who can think, and choose an operating system, for themselves and for their own needs. -mike ryan
