Sorry, you do need JLK or Kanjitalk.

If you get a Performa you can the acclaimed Macwrite for free. It's
something, if free software is what you're looking for... Have you done
any Japanese input with Nisus? Nisus is great for things like that.

How is that accomplished? Someone just made the Japanese add-on for
free, because they wanted to be nice? How is text handled? I assume with
a bitmapped font system that it at least as good as Apple? Are the fonts
Truetype?
