LOTS OF STUFF MISSING in here. The experiences described above were all
CD-ROM based installations, except DOS/Win3.x.

I always use CD (both Slackware and Yggdrasil). With all the snipping of 
messages being responded to you have become confused.

The original poster claimed linux was easy and began describing
downloading disk images. 

I replied with my CD based experience that linux was equivalent at best.
