: less convenient, so this is not the window type that is used most.

Types of Windows with regard to refresh:

superbitmap -
The application draws into a arbitrarily sized bitmap that the windowing
libraries will copy into the window. The app never needs to deal with
refresh events because the bitmap already has the data needed to draw
any exposed area of the window.

smart refresh -
The application draws into the window's raster port. The the window
maintains clipped areas in backing store, so that it can refresh as
parts of the window are covered and uncovered. The application never
needs to deal with refresh events due to movement of overlapping windows.
It _will_, however, get refresh events when the window is resized to
expose areas that the application has not yet drawn to.

simple refresh -
The application draws into the window's raster port. The window
maintains no information about what is being drawn. The application will
receive refresh events any time a part of the window is exposed.

no-care refresh -
The application draws into the window's raster port. The window
doesn't do any refreshing of the window, and never bothers to tell
the application about refresh events, either. Usually, this means that
the app is always busy drawing into the window (like those bouncing-lines
demos), or this is the the only window on a custom screen, and the
programmer is certain that there will never be a window laid on top of
it, or this program is a fast hack and the programmer just doesn't care.

Of course, even with the no-care refresh, the window borders and icons
are redrawn, windows can be moved, sized, etc. None of this is the
responsibility of the individual apps. Nor should it be.

As a final note, for those who want to take over the full display,
screens have raster ports, as well, and it is fully possible to open
a custom screen and wraw anything you like, without dealing with
windows at all. It's usually easier to open a full-size borderless
window to cover that screen, but it's possible.
