In article <DCL9rv.8yA@world.std.com> jimf@world.std.com (jim frost) writes: NT's design is *very* different from that of VMS. There are some similar features (the VMM system, named pipes, and mailslots in particular are highly reminiscent of VMS) but in general NT is quite different inside and out. For example, documentation to the system calls was widely available, and VMS didn't force Win32 on people. NT is indeed a resource-hungry system, although not completely out-of-line with competitive systems. In terms of performance, however, you'll find that each release of NT has resulted in considerable improvements and at this point it is quite competitive. And as long as there are suits reading Ziff-Davis and dreaming of "enterprise-wide multi-platform interoperable network maintenance" and other such vacuous crap, they will have no problems selling copies. Has anyone found a decent X server for NT? We are using XCeed 4.0 and it is a real dog. The local window manager only dreams of being mwm compatible, for example... quite a disappointment. My experience with NT so far has been pretty bad. It's amazing how slow a P90 can be made to run. geir gmj@panix.com
