Sure they do. Small companies and single business owners make up
a considerable percentage of computers used in business. These
people don't have MIS, and don't want to pay for tech help.
This is exactly why my step-father uses a Mac. He runs an old
Powerbook 160. He'd love to get a faster machine. He's looked
at Windows laptops (he won't pay for a 5X0 Powerbook; thinks
they cost too much, and he _hates_ the trackpad). He won't
buy a Windows box, though. Why? He is constantly adding software
to his machine. He's seen the problems friends of his have doing
the same with their personal computers. He manages all of his
business information on his laptop, and he needs the certainty
that he can get new software to work soon. Sure, he sometimes
has problems. But they are miniscule compared to what he'd have
to deal with from Windows.
Don't doubt, many business users do install their own software.
This is an imporant issue to anyone who isn't a largish corporation.
