Every expensive UNIX workstation vendor out there is a "marketing force" pushing linux. Every university providing UNIX systems to students is a "marketing force" pushing linux. Linux fell into a vacuum and "got pretty well spread", no surprise there. UNIX is incredibly popular in the academic and scientific communities. But it was always out of reach to us at a personal level. Only our companies or universities could afford the systems. We had to settle for PCs or Macs (in recent history) as personal systems. There was a hunger to have UNIX at home also, linux was the first to truly satisfy that hunger. If AT&T, Dec, or Sun had come out with a low-cost (<$100) UNIX implementation for PCs then linux would not have enjoyed much popularity at all. Very few people care about source code. There was a demand for UNIX, linux was the first thing that showed up. Tony -- ------------------ Tony Tribelli adtribelli@acm.org
