On the other hand, if I'm not sure where to look, I'll
search through the menus. Now, since the mouse is on the
right hand side of the screen (I'm playing with disk icons),
I'll start with the furthest-right menu, "Special", which
contains an "Eject" command...

But, the point is, a novice user won't realise that they
need to select "Put Away", and will get confused when the
Mac wants the disk back.

The Mac's use of the word "Eject" is specific to the Mac,
and different to the general usage of the word -- to
retrieve a CD from a CD player, the normal method is to
press the "Eject" button, not the "Put away" button, for
example.
