Not really. I built this machine (486dx/33 w/8mb) from parts I
bought/had around the house. I also have another machine that my
father and I built a few years ago downstairs for other people in the
family to use. My father has his own machine in his room as well,
that he built from parts he mail-ordered. A few months ago, I built a
486sx/25 system with 8 meg for my grandparents, since I had the
motherboard, some old SIMMs, an old .31 dp monitor and a few other
spare parts lying around, so I could get them off their old 386sx/16.
I've even built a Pentium 85 machine from parts I mail ordered for a
friend becuase he couldn't get a half decent price anywhere for a
custom system, and didn't have the expertise himself. It's pretty
easy once you get everything down, and use hardware you've delt with
and installed before.
Of course, I may be more the exception than the rule. :-)
