Minix, Coherent (a commercial Unix sold for $99 including very good documentation) and 386BSD (the "parent" of NetBSD and FreeBSD) were already in place when the Linux project was started. And you seem to dismiss completely all those people whose _first_ contact with Unix was Linux. I guess Matt Welsh just wasted his time writing "Linux Installation and Getting Started" for the Unix illiterate reader, since every Linux user was already an experienced Unix user. And probably nobody buys the commercial books about Linux which fill the bookshelves of the bookshops.
