CPM: Control Program for Microcomputers. A microcomputer operating system developed by Gary Killdall/Digital Research in the mid seventies for the first generation of microcomputers. It was the first operating system that dominated the microcomputer market. It wasn't until 1983 that MS-DOS clearly eclipsed it--and it was widely used for several years thereafter. The fact that most new apps were developed first for CPM--and then maybe for other operating systems--did not save it from being overtaken MS-DOS. That was my point. The Apple II made significant inroads against CPM because the VisiCalc spreadsheet was originally available only for Apple IIs. People came to the computer store and asked to buy the "Visicalc Machine." Same thing happened with Lotus 123 and the IBM PC. One way to catalyze a change from WinDOS to some worthy rival would be a performance advantage of 4 to 1, price parity, and a reasonable supply of the high-quality apps for the competing OS. The PowerPC meets 3 out of the 4 requirements already. It may achieve the final one in the post-604/620 generation--about mid 1997. >: > >: >So how does Poser do on a Pentium? >: > >: >How's QuickDraw GX doing? >: > >: >How many multiple-language wordprocessors do you have? >: > >: >Etc? >: > >: >: Does that explain my point? >: >Hmmm?
