You definitely have very limited experience with DOS.
Have you ever seen _one_ DOS-compliant program in your sence?
I haven't.

Actually, I have seen such programs: early versions of pkzip and other
archivers. Even latest pkzip does sidestep DOS for performance reasons.
_All_ business applications and most shareware programs _do_ sidestep DOS.
All timing-sensitive apps do sidestep DOS. Most graphical apps do sidestep DOS.
Every program that shows coloured letters on the screen does sidestep DOS.
Nearly every program that understands arrows, functional keys and keypad
does sidestep DOS.

I do not speak about games...

Examples of DOS emulators that run only DOS-compliant programs are
early versions of Linux dosemu and BSD DOS emulation. They are pretty
much useless.

Cheers,
	Fat Brother.
