Take a look at the implications of Windows NT sometime: when NT or its
successor (commonly called "Cairo") succeed WinDOS-95, porting
applications to run under NT/Cairo on a faster RISC processor of some
sort will require no more than a recompile.  Applications could even be
shipped as "Fat Binaries" that contain the object code for a variety
processors.  One way or another, the x86 dynasty will be toppled
eventually.
