I think it's about time someone started a new operating system from scratch, with no regard for trying to stay compatible with anything else. Backwards compatibility can always be done with emulation anyway. Also, there is a definite demand for significantly different OS features for different uses. For example, the Amiga tends to be much more responsive to the user when under high load than Unix is, due to its fixed-priority multitasking. However, in a multi-user environment, Unix's dynamic priorities are clearly better. Many issues such as this could be made options within the OS, but they have to be considered at the design stage, rather than bolted on afterwards. If anyone is working on such an OS, I'd be delighted to know about it (GNU Hurd perhaps?). -- -- Duncan Grisby -- -- dpg1001@cam.ac.uk -- -- finger dpg1001@cus.cam.ac.uk for PGP public key. --
