Definitely agree. I might think of them as inexperienced, but I'll think of them as "dumb" only if they end up asking the same question repeatedly after having been told the same answer repeatedly. >> Your right most dumb end-users may not know what PMT means but >> hopefully the professionals they ask do know what it means, and >> that is indispensable. > >Indispensable?? I do not think that word means what you think it means. >99% of the people who use computers have been without it for >decades. Of course, prior to Windows, 99% of the people who used computers had been without GUIs for decades. That some large group of people managed to do without a particular capability for a long period of time in no way implies that the capability isn't useful or won't become essential. I'll certainly agree that preemptive multitasking isn't as much of an improvement over cooperative multitasking as protected memory is over unprotected memory, but it's nonetheless an improvement that has the potential to be rather significant. PMT on a Mac would mean that my fiancee could have run her statistical analysis on her data and continued to work on her thesis at the same time, instead of waiting hours for the analysis to complete. >Plus, any so-called professional who says to me without first asking what >I want to *do* with my computer would be right out the door. Definitely agree with this as well, with one caveat: knowing what you want to do *now* and realizing what you'll need later are two very different things. Most people have an inkling of what they want to do with their computer now but have no idea what they'll need it to do in the future. It's not like PMT is groundbreakingly new technology or anything. It's been around a long time. There's no good excuse for any modern OS to use CMT over PMT. -- Kevin Brown kevin@frobozz.sccsi.com This is your .signature virus: < begin 644 .signature (9V]T8VAA(0K0z end > This is your .signature virus on drugs: <> Any questions?
