Presumably the same way it copes with the fact that floppies
can be suddenly not there -- disks have names. If my main hard
drive partition (named Work:) suddenly disappears (which would
be unfortunate since it's a fixed disk...), and something tries
to access it, the OS will prompt with "Please insert volume
Work: in any drive". It will do this regardless of whether the
disk is a floppy or some SCSI disk like a ZIP or CDROM.

I would have assumed that the Mac could do the same. Not all of
us are stuck with these primitive drive letters.
