OK, here is a bit of Mac user fodder, you can switch off the
animations by editing the registry.....ARRRGGGHHHH if one ever thought
editing Config.sys was bad, just try this one.....be careful not to
become  stark raving mad.....but you can turn off the animations.

Yet a simpler way, use your favorite web browser and go to
www.microsoft.com.  Click on Free Software and download the utilty
called Power Tools.  Inside Power Tools you will find things such as
FlexCD, AutoCD, Xmouse (activate windows to a focus by simply passing
a mouse over them, an X Windows feature copied to Win95), Quick RES
(change resolution without rebooting ---very nice), and, most useful,
a control panel app called TWEAK GUI.  With Tweak GUI you can easily
set:

Your animations.
The shortcut icon behavior.
The boot up options (very nice if you don't want to edit MSDOS.SYS).
Menuing speed.
Remove or add those annoying desktop icons that seem to hang around.
