The 13MB/s is the speed at which the drive can move data between its buffer (something like 64k... maybe bigger on the 1280, the 64k was for the 540). and the controller. The drive itself can manage 2.5-5MB/s, depending on how much is has to move the heads around. Actually, if you read single random sectors all over the disk, it's going to be a lot worse :) Michael A.
