Packard Bell, the company, has been around for dozens of years...maybe even fifty. They made electronic equipment and/or training courses sold by mail order for many years. Go back to a 1960's or 70's issue of Popular Electronics or Popular Science magazine and you'll see their ads. The company went or almost went bankrupt in the mid 80's and was resurrected as a low cost PC clone company. I have nothing constructive to say on the quality of their PC's (having no first hand knowledge). But your idea as to where the name came from is totally bogus.
