Plenty of Mac upgrades exist, from things like complete logic board replacements down to PPC upgrade cards and CPU-socket daughtercards. From third parties as well as Apple. To imply otherwise would be to demonstrate ignorance or deliberate misinformation. The 601 upgrade card which goes in any Quadra was but one example which I used for a year or so before I sold my machine and got a new one. The classic "midlife kicker". I expect this picture to improve even more as CHRP/PPP makers get the ball rolling, many of them will be using low-cost baby-AT enclosures and motherboards to match. A case can be made for the typical AT-compatible's extreme modular design (very little on the MB), although this gets a little cloudier when you run out of high performance slots (not too many 8-slot PCI machines out there). A lot of the cost reduced PC designs that are popping up for 1996 are swinging back towards a Quadra-ish design with an integrated frame buffer/accelerator (or UMA), ethernet, disk controller, etc on the MB, so the hapless user isn't slot starved on Day 1...
