IMHO, working with 32-bit x86 code is not quite as nice as 68K, but it is a vast improvement over 16-bit x86. The 16-bit nature of DOS and Win16 complicated programming with near/far pointers, local/global memory, 64K blocks of memory, etc. Even though Win95 has lots of 16-bit code inside, it presents the Win32 API to the programmer, same as WinNT. Programming in Win32 is much nicer than DOS and Win16. If you are careful about what operating system functionality you require, you can even run Win32 apps under 16-bit Win3.1 with Microsoft's Win32s extensions. This little fact let me convince management to go Win32 for all current and new projects. Our Mac programmers no longer threaten mutiny when they have to work on the Windows side for a few weeks :-).
