After Windows 95: Mac unit sales thrive
Record shipments highlight quarter
By Jon Swartz (Jon_Swartz@macweek.ziff.com)
On the eve of Microsoft Corp.'s $400 million launch of its new
operating system last summer, one skittish Mac developer wondered out
loud, "Will there be life AW, After Windows 95?"
Three months later, the answer is a resounding "yes." And Apple has an
unlikely source to thank: Windows 95.
Since the new OS' trumpeted debut Aug. 24, Mac unit shipments have not
merely held their own, they've flourished. "Certainly, some of
the marketing money Microsoft spent on Windows 95 rolled off into the
Mac market," said Frank Stearn, partner at Sunrise Computers of
Chambersburg, Pa. "A lot of people were made aware of the technology."
And, apparently, a lot of people bought into the Mac technology.
Apple said it shipped a record 1.25 million units during its recently
completed quarter. Meanwhile, sources at Ingram Micro Inc. of Santa
Ana, Calif., and Intelligent Electronics Inc. of Exton, Pa., two of
Apple's largest distributors, reported a record-breaking number of
orders
in September and October.
Brisk sales enabled Apple to nab the top spot for personal computer
shipments in the United States during the third quarter. The company
shipped 788,000 Macs over the past three months, good for 13.1 percent
of the domestic market, according to Dataquest Inc. of San Jose,
^^^^
Calif. Compaq Computer Corp. was second, with shipments of 727,000, or
12.1 percent. On a global scale, Apple shipped 1.28 million
units, second only to Compaq's 1.49 million, Dataquest said.
According to International Data Corp. of Framingham, Mass., Apple's
worldwide market share during the second quarter inched up to 7.9
percent from 7.8 percent in the same quarter a year ago (see MacWEEK,
Oct. 9, Page 4).
This summer, Dataquest predicted that Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft
would sell 30 million copies of Windows 95 by the end of the
year. Last week, though, it cut its forecast to 16 million, saying
corporate customers were slow to switch to the new OS.
-------------------
I would say that 13.1 is closer to 14% than 9%.
