>>The current box with dual-603s is in every way faster and more responsive than the fastest Mac I have played with (an 8500/120.) Linux on this baby will _cook_, and the thought of dual 601s or (steady, now) 604s is almost too much to handle. Are any of the Linux kernels floating around SMP? If not then it'll only take advantage of one of the 603s and from what I've read about the Bebox a large portion of its speed comes from the very tight coding of the OS and the fact that all of the servers were designed from the ground up with SMP in mind. 1 603 with no L2 cache running @66MHz is quick, but it's by no means a scorcher by today's standards, especially if the software it's running won't be all that optimal like the initial Linux ports probably will be. A much better solution would be to have a MachTen-like unix environment for the BeOS which would use the BeOS' kernel, servers, and file system. It would probably outperform a single-processor or even SMP Linux on a BeBox and allow one concurrent access to any of the Be apps that will be available. Plus there'd be no dual-booting or volume mounting hassles. >>I know I'm getting one; I'm tired of waiting for Apple. I probably will get one in a year or two also, but it will probably be nowhere near as productive as my PowerMac running Copland in the same time frame. There's certain software I need that just isn't and probably won't ever be available for the Bebox. Later, -Eric
