Yes, you have been told this... You should try it yourself to see
how easy/difficult it is. It's definitely harder than configuring
a video setup for Windows but I had my computer up and running
in 1024x768 in about 45 seconds from when I started the setup.
I must admit that I did not really try to get it to run in
1280x1024 until last week when I reinstalled some of the documentation.
I realized it had misdetected my clockchip. I set it correctly
and had 1280x1024 in 10 seconds. Using SuperProbe, /usr/X11/lib/X11/Cards
and xf86config can make it trivial or you may still have problems.
It could definitely be easier but I don't think it is anywhere
close you "you haven't lived till you configure it" since I
have done it on 7 different machines.

>why photoshop exists...why would anyone bother using ps on linux?

"Anyone" would bother with PS on Linux if they prefer using Linux
to a Mac. If I were using PS then I'd rather use it on Linux
than on a Mac, but it isn't available in the first place.

"Soon enough?" I thought the deadlines keep going back and back?
Of course this is no different than M$ with w95 or IBM with
OS/2 for PowerPC.

And I would hope so considering that it is impossible to run PS
on Linux to start with unless you consider displaying it from
a Sun or SGI to be "running on it."
