Without debating the merits of your argument (i.e., that the Mac
is an inefficient & obsolete platform), I would point out that the
strongest virtue of the Mac has always been its ease of use. For
the
great mass of computer-illiterate users, the Mac has provided an
intuitive and transparent GUI, and a set of hardware options that
are
very easy to configure. In regard to abstract, hierarchical
directory structures, DOS and MacOS aren't all that different...
except that the average person can learn MacOS on the fly, whereas
learning DOS can be like learning Latin (at least for the
uninitiated).
Perhaps Windows 95 will eventually level the playing field... But
as someone who has spent hours on the phone with apologetic
technical
support people, I can tell you that Windows 95 is in no sense a
transparent operating system. Rumors of software and device-driver
compatability have been greatly exaggerated.
