Although I myself don't like doing a lot of printing, doing so has one great merit: one can read some document without being at one's computer. Also, let us not forget about graphics programs. I've drawn numerous diagrams, and graphics programs (all-GUI, of course :-) have been VERY helpful. I can have precision alignment, perfectly straight lines and round circles, neat text, smooth colors, you name it. And I can revise VERY easily. I presume the CLI-head approach would be to compose some file that is then fed to some program to create a printed-out diagram. >>-GUI: Keeps me from having to type in dozens of 10+ character >>filenames when I want to delete a portion of what's in a directory. >Aside from the fact that just about every CLI has a way to avoid doing >this -- I find it far too easy to have accidents with every GUI I've >ever used. I think you need some mouse practice :-) Xerox PARC once had a mouse-practice game called "Fly" in which the cursor becomes a flyswatter and you're suppost to get the cursor over the fly and click. I have a Mac version of that called "Bash Big Blue", in which one tries to get an IBM logo, but it breaks in System 7. Has anyone come up with some updated version -- say, "Bash Bill Gates"? >>-Cut & Paste: Nice when I want to transfer a graphic to my word >>processing document. Faster? Like how? I've used CLI editors and I'm not likely to return to them any time. If you are talking about editors like emacs, I'd like to propose that they are character-mode GUI editors -- they run like some Macintosh editor, except that they only accept keyboard commands (I've used X-window versions of emacs which allow one to move the cursor with a mouse, however). >>-24 bit Color: Don't you Unix types use computers for anything besides >>database manipulation and file transfers? :-) Please see "Video" >>below. >24 bit Color is data structure manipulation -- and not very interesting really. >Fast matrix multiplication is a much more interesting subject -- I'd make do >with fewer colors in exchange for being able to present them in 3d rapidly. Yawn all you want, but if you want to see what an image *really* looks like, you'll have to have 24-bit color. Otherwise, you'll be stuck with dithering, which is pixel-level fakery, and a waste of CPU time. That's one reason I prefer to look at images with a Macintosh instead of a SparcStation at work -- the SparcStation only has an 8-bit video board (how much does a 24-bit video board for a SparcStation cost?), while my home Mac has a 16-bit video board and my office Mac has a 24-bit video board.
