This is true for all systems.
Until recently, OS/2 was not a good choice for MIDI apps. Since
it can switch tasks at critical times, the apps can't control the
time acurately, and the OS didn't provide acurate services to do it.
I believe that recent developments can provide acuracy and services
to OS/2 native apps that (will) use them, but I don't know if it
already passed beta. This means that most users interested in MIDI
wouldn't choose OS/2, and I've heard of some that switched to
OS/2 and back to Win3.1.
For users, the better systems for composition are MacOS,
and next, Win3.1.
Many people bought IBM compatibles essencialy to paly games. I
believe that DOS was good either to develop or play games.
The point is, there is no kind of multitasking or OS that
solves all problems and is always the better solution. In
some situations UNIX may be the better choice, in others MacOS
may be the better one, in others even DOS can be acceptable,
and in others the OS may be almost irrelevant...
If we would care about sale numbers, I believe that they would
support singletasking and CM more than PM, since sales of DOS, Win3.1
and MacOS have been so high.
: It's not rocket science and at least some people think it's important.
It's difficult to switch to PM without breaking existing apps,
and still providing some advantage over running the apps in the previous
system.
Anyway, Copland is coming, and I expect it to offer PM, and other
advantages that are, in my opinion, more important.
Cheers,
Jaime.
