I shall strive harder to follow it in the future. I was confused; itoa() is the function I was thinking of. In a DCE/C++ environment, it's a lot easier to go without stdio.h. For reasons unknown to me at the moment, the HP systems here need to be linked with static libraries. I think it has something to do with DCE compatibility, but I'm not by any means sure.
