Hi,

The "stuff" is the result of formatting information embedded based on the
MIME intertnet standard. This is an internet standard for posting news and
mail which can be displayed using specified fonts, sizes, color, etc... as
well as graphics and other embedded information. This is an old standard
(by net time frames) but is not widely supported - yet.

Cyberdog, Apples submission to the browser wars, supports the MIME
standard. NewsWatcher, and most other news readers dont. I expect Cyberdog
is going to be stirring up quite a bit of controversy over this "feature".
However, I expect most mainstream readers will be updated soon to be at
least "aware" of the MIME content and filter out the formatting info if
they dont want to take the time to display it. (That is what NewsWatcher
will do RSN.)

Personally I like it - I also understand that to many people the formatting
and graphics are not important nor desired. In fact, I expect to see heated
debate around the issue from both sides. Those against will have a valid
argument that it is going to escalate the bandwidth and storage
requirements to run news servers upwards of an order of magnitude.

I expect this is going to be as devisive (and interesting) as the CLI/GUI
wars.

I look on it as progress that was bound to come about any way, and even
though Apple didnt invent it, they are going to be the brunt of the nay
sayers because Cyberdog uses it. It is "Optional" in Cyberdog, but most
users are not aware of how to go about not sending a formatted message.
