In article <danpop.826424237@rscernix> Dan Pop, danpop@mail.cern.ch writes: >Again, pure vapour vs shipping OS's and applications. That's the best >a MacOS fan can do today. Can you say lame? > In all fairness, Windows users were making the same arguments a 18 months ago when Win95 was way behind schedule. OS/2 users were making the same arguments as well. Mac users were giving the same response you are giving. This industry is a constant game of leap frog. Even Win 3.x and NT are playing it. Comments like this show a basic ignorance of the way things work. The way I see it is that no matter how late, Apple will probably come up with something interesting, and something that MS will rush to mimic. It will probably be better than Win95-98, but probably not as good as NT (depending on what criteria are used to judge the two). Either way, I think software diversity (and hardware diversity) is a very good thing. Just genitics, a small gene pool will doom a population. A large gene pool insures vital change and mututation making the populations more adaptable and evolved. A single OS/HW platform is the worst thing that could happen to the industry. Not only would one see innovation slow to a trickle as it has in the mainstream PC market, but the choice of applications begins to wane as well, another phenomenon evident in the PC market. The lack of competing hardware platforms also diminishes the general population. IMO, the poor state of the PC arcitecture is directly related to the small number of vendors actively developing hw. 60-75% of the PC market is directly controlled by Intel via its motherboards now, and except for high end systems from the likes of HP, Compaq and IBM, any improvement of the basic architecture is defined on Intel's timetable. I say more power to the Amiga's, Apple's, NeXT's and Be's of the world. WT
