Not to mention the fact that the Mac does essentially the same filename completion. Let's go to the videotape! Bob rips the mouse out of his 8500 and chucks it confidently into the corner of his office. He states with a nod of his head: 'Ah yes, I want to modify that student database and print a report.' He types: 'B' and the icon for Bob's World (the appropriate hard drive) highlights. He presses 'cmd-O' and the window opens up. He types: 'F' and the icon for Files highlights. Another 'cmd-O' and that window opens. He types: 'WO' and the icon for Working highlights (he has a Web folder). Another 'cmd-O' and it is open. He types: 'F' and the icon for Final highlights. Another 'cmd-O' and it is open. He types: 'W' and the icon for Winter 1996 highlights. Another 'cmd-O'. He types: 'S' and the icon for Students highlights. Another 'cmd-O' and Filemaker Pro springs to life opening the database. Bob rises out of his chair waving his clenched hands over his head, victorious at having opened a Mac file nested 5 folders deep with a mere 13 keystrokes. Knowing where that file lay in the hierarchy allowed Bob to open the file, without benefit of mouse, in just over 2 seconds. (Of course it only takes a bit over 1 second with the mouse with the same knowledge). Let's repeat the same experiment without the benefit of knowledge of where the file is. Bob returns to his seat and ponders. 'Ah, that report I did last year, I need to do that again. I wonder where it is...' He types: 'cmd-F' He types 'Winter' knowing it is part of the name of the file 'Winter 1995 Enrollment Report' A window opens with 8 items on it. Winter 1995 Enrollment Report is the fifth item. He presses the down arrow 4 times and presses 'cmd-O'. Clarisworks springs to life opening the file. It was located in 'Bob's World:Files:Reports:1995:Enrollment'. 12 keystrokes. A bit more than 3 seconds because of the 2 gig search it had to do. With mouse clicks, a bit less than 3 seconds. Practice makes perfect I suppose. Anyway, I prefer having a choice of methods. What about all of you. -- Bob Cassidy UC Irvine
