> Yes, unlike their Mac equivalents, Gershwin and Copland, NT and Win95 > are both shipping. True... but neither NT nor Win95 are quite what they say they are. Win95 is still a 16 bit OS - with MINIMAL protection and PMT... and NT still doesn't have the Win95 interface, and has performance disadvantages when running WOW. > MacOS 7.x -- Windows 3.x: no memory protection, no PMT > Copland -- Win95: limited memory protection and PMT, due to backward > compatibility requirements. > Gershwin -- Win/NT: full memory protection and PMT, limited backward > compatibility. Incorrect. MacOS 7.0+ has better memory protection that Win3... and 7.5 is a little better still (with protected code-segments). While I agree that Win95 is above Mac Sys7 in protection (and in preemption), it is not by that much... and Sys7 is above Win3. In other words calling System7 the same as Win3 is WRONG (innaccurate). But Win95 is still a little better than Sys7. As for Copland - it is BETTER than Win95 in MANY areas... though there all still shortcomings. Sys7 > Win3 Copland > Win95 Gershwin?!?!? I wont speculate on Vapor (no frozen feature set yet). > It's clearly not my fault that the Mac equivalents of Win95 and Win/NT > are not here and nobody knows when they'll be. This doesn't mean that > MacOS 7.x apps can be meaningfully compared to Win95 or Win/NT apps. > Power or 68k, MacOS 7.x apps can be compared only to Win 3.x apps. Kaka! Win3 does not have checking demand paged virtual memory (like Modern Memory Manager) nor does it protect code segments against writes. Also System7 is a TRUE 32 bit OS... unlike Win95... Also System7's features work as advertised. So I agree apple does NOT have as secure an OS as WinNT. But what do users care about? Stability or the catch terms? Why the Mac wont have PURE seperate memory spaces - but will behave 99% like it does... and System 7 on the mac is a HELL of a lot more stable than Win95... despite the technological advantage in one small area of Win95, that doesn't seem to work right in the real world! -- David K.
