Of course they make the user faster (in 98% of the cases) so is it really a waste of MIPS?!?! So is wasting a little CPU time in the forground on a single user machine such a big deal, when that user is seldom doing anything else? I think not. How fast can you type anyways?!?!? So a CLI COULD take less processor time - you can't type that fast (or read that fast anyways). My 7500 scrolls text much much faster than I can read it, and accepts characters much much faster than I can type it anyways (under a CLI under a GUI). So who cares?!?! In fact apple is looking at new ways to burn MIPS - like active assistance - automatic finding - 3D metaphores and Virtual Spaces... why, because arguably those metaphores and features will use the computers resources to make ME more productive. I dont need MIPS in the background - I need my MIPS working for ME! -- David K. Every Sr. Software Engineer Jostens Learning Corp.
