No, I'd do cd pub<tab> With set autolist turned on it will list all the available dirs/files that I can look at. If I specify cd pub/s<tab> then it will only show the files starting with s. If I don't put an s then the pattern to match is everything so it essentially does an ls for me. >> If you're going to use a GUI for file finding >> then I can use a text mode find command. Call it silly if you want. I suppose I should carry around a dictionary with me all the time so that I don't memorize the meanings of words? >> That doesn't mean that I can't use find and find my file just as >> fast as with a GUI find or clicking around looking for it. > >Okay- so find that file with the name you can't quite remember, in a >directory that lives about five levels down, and open it. Especially if there's a >/simulation_notes directory (or even a Simulation_Notes). I like having case sensitivity. But I agree to a certain extent. There should be an option in the shell to have "ignore cases" for file name completion. Perhaps there already is such a thing. I'll have to check. >> >This is *not* anywhere close to "Apple Menu... hold... drag... there- >> >there- there- there- there- got it." >> >> You're right. I've tried using various GUI file managers and I always find myself wasting more time scrolling on the down arrow buttons because the number of files is huge. Some file managers support the page down key, but not all do. Then there is the problem of what program the file is linked to. When you click on the file it launches an associated application right? Can you have multiple app links? I heard OS/2 did this, but I don't know if the MacOS does. If I created a file in xpaint, then I want to be able to load it into xv as well. How do I do this from a GUI file manager when the file.gif is what I see in front of me? Do I still have to start up the other nonlinked program and then do "file/load?" Ravi -- Ravi K.
