You'll see who is the guy who has NO idea what : he is talking about. Of course there is certain problems associated with taking away the main user interface. However, the _only_ binary that a unix system commonly depends upon is /etc/init. In most implementations of init, a number of shell script is executed to do the system setup, but this could be changed to executing binaries quite easily (actually, it does execute whatever is there, so you wouldn't even have to change init, just replace the shell scripts by matching binaries). Init then starts some sort of getty process for each line (or console), which is a binary. The getty process, upon receiving a login name, starts "login", which, again, is a binary. Upon successful login, "login" starts whatever "shell" is given in /etc/passwd for that user, which might as well be some sort of GUI. Now tell me, except for the easily corrected instance of setup scripts, where does a shell come into play? Bernie
