For a long while IBM were the best supplier of PCs. I would be a lot happier about buying from Apple if they were the best supplier of Macs instead of the only one. Apple are gradually making smarter moves - PCI PowerMacs might help (*if* enough 3rd parties start producing cheap cards); The Pippin is a good idea (*if* no equivalent intel-based machine appears in the next year or so) - but the CDROM market, which is poised to become as big as the record industry, is rapidly running away from Apple - if Apple were really smart they would freely distribute the right to clone the Pippin and simply hand out hardware specs, board layouts, whatever, to any company who cared to produce the thing. Hell, it's a nice name - they could allow use of the name Pippin on any machine that complied with their specs. That would help them win back the CDROM market and hence boost the demand for full PowerMacs as CDROM development platforms. Also, the authoring software has to be free, or at least very cheap so that anyone can start producing CDROMS - creative people rarely have much cash to spend - and all of that has to happen this year, otherwise Apple will be marginalized in the market opportunity of the century. -m. -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AllLargelyPropagandaOfCourseAllLargelyPropagandaOfCourseAllLargelyProp ----------------------------------------------------------------------
