Hi all,
here is the set of answers I received about speech for the PowerPC. For
me it has raised some more questions, which I'll intersperse.

From: kahuna@metronet.com (Warren Magnus)

Talked to Apple just today about that very same issue. They assure me that
native mode Plain-Talk and the Plain-Talk microphone bundle should be in
stores by late next week. It apparently is just now shipping. Sorry, but
they as always were clueless on pricing. I know that I am going to have to
buy it...

[So should it have come bundled with my new 6100/60AV ???]

From: tillery@infi.net (Garland Tillery)

The PlainTalk software only comes with the AV machines, and didn't
even deliver with the first AV upgrades...only with brand-new AV
machines...already installed on the hard disk, 'cause there weren't
any floppies ready to ship! I bought a 7100AV upgrade, and fully
expected to get PlainTalk with it, but it was not there. So, I called
Apple Support here (the 800-SOS-APPL number in the US) and they
shipped me floppies a couple of weeks later.

[Anyone know how to contact Apple in Australia ? Preferably through the
internet, but any way would be good !]

From: satish@sun.mcs.clarkson.edu (Satish Thatte)

Basically, I was told to get both Speech Manager and MacinTalk
from one of the archive sites (ftp.apple.com:/dts/mac/sys.soft/speech
is the official location but one of the mirror sites near you
might also have it. Or try ftp.germany.eu.net:/pub/comp/macintosh/speech
-- the apple site is often very slow).

There are two system extensions -- speech manager and plaintalk,
and a bunch of "voices" which go in the system folder.

I am surprised they sold you an AV box without the speech software!
I think you should complain loudly on the relevant newsgroups.

[So am I. Anybody know which newsgroups Apple employees read ??]
*****************
So there are the replies, but unfortunately not too much about the Speech
Recognition software. Does anybody know anything about this - where I can
get PowerPC software to do it, and why I didn't get it when I paid for a
new PPC ??

If anybody can help with these questions, please email me and I will post
relevant sections in a summary.

Thanks, Nick.
