Welllllll --- what you describe for the 8M machine is a properly setup 4M
machine. If you properly set up the 8M machine to save memory (that is, a
custom compiled kernel with only bare bones included, the rest of
functionality loaded as modules when needed, ash instead of bash, rxvt
instead of xterm, small scrollback buffers, a custom linked X-server
including only your specific chipset, no unnecessary daemons), 8M will take
you very very far. Of course, running WordPerfect for SCO (which is
statically linked and a monster) isn't a good idea, and manipulating
2048x2048 true colour images isn't either. But even a GNU emacs with a lot
of customization doesn't take more than a Meg after days of heavy use.

Just because the standard install is wasteful doesn't mean you have to stick
with it.
