I've never had a problem like that on a >Mac when I run an applicationm from a floppy. Maybe I was doing something wrong. Take a disk with a file associated with an application (say a text file associated with the "emacs" editor). Put the "emacs" editor on "EMACS Disk 2". Put the text file on "EMACS Disk 1". Take the floppies to a Mac that's never seen EMACS, and plug in "EMACS Disk 1". Open the text file on Disk 1. Don't you get "unknown application" or "application unknown" processing? On the Amiga, you just put "EMACS Disk 2:emacs" or some such in the Icon associated with the text file. Workbench will show a requester: "please insert 'EMACS Disk 2' in any drive". Stick in the floppy and the editor loads. The requester will go away automatically, unless you decide to cancel the request. If EMACS is later loaded into a hard drive directory, a simple "assign 'EMACS Disk 2:' drive1:utilities.public/bin" will assure that opening the text file on Disk 1 will now load EMACS from the hard drive directory named "drive1:utilities.public/bin". I'm not saying the Mac way doesn't have some good advantages -- it was just difficult to follow the trail left in the "Inside MacIntosh" volumes. I never found a straight-forward explanation of how Finder located the executable from an APPL ID/version. Only after I figured out that the Desktop was a "global directory" of information somewhat independent of the File System did it begin to make some sense. So, I never did figure out how to have two copies of the same application (stored in two different directories) and force the Finder to pick a specific one when I opened a data file. Does the Finder use the last one loaded or the first one? If I copy one application to another directory, does that operation now link the copied version with the Desktop? And what part of Inside Mac. would tell me the answers? Al Varney
