: Its called "Shut Down" and it isn't exactly a button, it's a menu item.
: It's on all new Macs and most Macs since the Mac II series. It shuts the
: OS down and then turns off the computer.

This is obviously only any good on single-user machines. On my Linux PC
I am usually logged in as myself, not as root, just as a precaution. So
when I want out, I simply su to root and type "halt". Putting this into
a clickable menu option assumes you don't have to get through the root
password. I should hope the desirability of this barrier is obvious.

It becomes clear that even very knowledgeable people find the multi-user
environment culturally quite different (ie, unanticipated), until they
are forced to think about it. My brother: "you mean you have to log on
to your _own_ computer??"

: I also have a program whos only
: function is to play a sound and shut the computer off. It's mostly for a
: prank. You put it in a friend's Mac's Startup Items folder so when the
: computer turns on, the OS loads, plays a sound, and turns off again.
: Drives em nuts every time.
