The fool is not the PPC consortium making the statements. The fool
is the person who believes it without seeing it. The PPC/Apple marketeers
are just a bunch of glorified car salesmen making a living. Don't
buy it till you drive it. In defense of the marketeers, I think you
took their claims out of context a little bit, they probably
specifically stated performance greater than a certain CPU class
machine (say, 486 SX 25MHz or something like that).

Also, don't think
Intel doesn't pull stupid stunts like this. I once saw a live Intel promo
showing how great and fast the new 60MHz Pentium machines were (maybe a year
and a half ago). Just blows that 486 SX 25MHz away! No kidding?!
Why not compare it against the 486 DX 66? Add man's jazz. They all
do it. Just like comparing a PowerMAC 604 133 against an older,
non-Triton P5-90. The desired perception is conveyed : the PowerMAC
is much faster than the Pentium. The Pentium is much faster than the
486. The desired topic sentence with which to hypnotize the masses.

I filtered out the BS and didn't buy a Pentium until it really WAS
much faster than the 486. This happened with the latest P5-120 machines
with advanced cache and memory architectures.
