You keep on repeating this, which is not completely honest. Much of the impetus for Lisa and the Macintosh came from Xerox PARC. Apple paid xerox to use some of their basic concepts, and spent a lot of time and effort turning those concepts into a consistent, easy-to-use interface. I have used Xerox Star equipment in an office environment. It's significantly different from the Macintosh in a lot of user interface details, and my overall impression is a lot clunkier, too. |> Apple was the first one to include the results of this research |> work into a commercially successful product. Apple took the risk, and made computers easy to use. Microsoft then copied Apples work. Microsoft did not spend nearly as much time working on the basic human-factors aspects of Windows. It shows. Microsoft took advantage of the fine print in an earlier deal with Apple, and made Apple sign a license for some windowing technology; Apple got little if anything for their work. In the user interface lawsuit, Microsoft claimed that everything they copied from the Macintosh was covered by that license; Apple claimed that the license was much more restrivtive. Apple lost, and now Microsoft is copying every feature they can. -- Speaking only for myself, of course. Chris Wood christw@lexis-nexis.com ChrisCWood@aol.com
